Soccer Tournament in Concord

Soccer tournaments in drones around this time of the year. This is my son's last year to play in AYSO. Our soccer career as a family will end after he graduates in June.

One of the soccer tournaments happened in Concord, CA. There's not much time for sketching but I managed to squeeze in a few.
Going to Concord

After the first game, we all decided to meet in the center of downtown Concord. Beautiful area. Very colorful.

Tree off in the distance from the soccer field. Maybe done in half time.

April's Let's Draw Davis

The weather was surprisingly pleasant despite the fact that it stormed the day before. A bit nippy and I went searching for fingerless gloves. No luck. It warmed up quite a bit later when we ended at the Co-op.

Many new faces. One woman and her daughter from Marin county. She found me on the internet by googling "scones". I do have a sketch of a scone on this blog and on my flickr page. But she found out about the sketchcrawl and came. Two women came after coming across Pete's exhibit at the Pence. So the Davis sketchcrawl is attracting many out of towners.

Sole Desire Shoes Store.
Drawing the signage at a curve angle was a bit of a challenge.

Carol, a regular sketchcrawler from Grass Valley area.

Ket MoRee Thai Restaurant.
There are many Thai restaurants in Davis. This restaurant's sign reflects the Thai's culture more.

Davis Food Co-op.
I guess the O had to be replaced but it makes it more interesting.

We met at the Davis Food Co-op and compared sketchbooks. It was amazing what we all came up with.

Orange Bass

First time in a long time my husband and I decided to head out to the Farmers' Market. Our plan was to listen to the two A Cappella groups sing. But only one group showed up. My husband stayed to listen. I wondered to the other end of the market to see what was there.

I came upon this band, each player had an instrument. Where I was sat, I had only their back views to see. But this bassist was the one closest. It was not hard to miss at any angle. Very orange.

Leaf Script Calligraphy

I got inspired by Jane Farr's entry on Leaf Script Calligraphy. She took the scripted capital L and drew it out with a pencil. She added a thin boundary around the L and added leaves. From there she shaded by crosshatching. It gives an impression of an old document lettering.

Anyway I gave it a try. It's not as good as hers but it was fun to do. It combines lettering and drawing together something that I hope to do more of with calligraphy.

Here I sketch the M out first and then went back with an eraser to carefully outline it.
Then I add the boundary and leaves.

Finally I came back with ink and crosshatch to create shadows.
