I got inspired by Jane Farr's entry on
Leaf Script Calligraphy. She took the scripted capital L and drew it out with a pencil. She added a thin boundary around the L and added leaves. From there she shaded by crosshatching. It gives an impression of an old document lettering.
Anyway I gave it a try. It's not as good as hers but it was fun to do. It combines lettering and drawing together something that I hope to do more of with calligraphy.

| Here I sketch the M out first and then went back with an eraser to carefully outline it. |
 |
| Then I add the boundary and leaves. |
 |
| Finally I came back with ink and crosshatch to create shadows. |
